3 Ways to Be Heart Smart
Valentine’s Day isn’t the only thing going on this month! Did you know that February is also Heart Health Month? Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Luckily, it’s also very preventable. Keeping your heart healthy is all about making smart choices. Here are 3 ways to do just that:
- Good fats – Omega-3s are a type of good fat found in olive oil, avocado, seeds, nuts, and fish.
- Legumes – with plentiful fiber, magnesium, and potassium, eating some of these could help lower your blood pressure. Try adding beans, lentils or peanuts to your diet!
- Whole grain – eat about 3 servings of whole grain (1 serving = 1 slice of whole grain bread) a day to keep your heart healthy.
Looking for ways to add these items to your daily diet? Get creative with your lunches, add avocado to your sandwich made with whole grain bread! And then snack on some peanuts in the afternoon to keep you powered through until the end of your work day. Check out your local Avenue C,breakroom or pantry for the nutritional snack options to get creative with these quick tips.
These three simple additions to your diet provide the necessary nutrients that may help lower your cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. This month as well as every month, let’s work together to encourage everyone around us to live heart-healthy lives.
